How I Passed The 107 Part B Exam - Drone Pilots License

I've been a photographer for six years and two years ago, I picked up a drone and that completely changed my life and business.  As a hobbyist, my drone was a cool toy to play with but as a photographer, I now had access to new perspectives.  In order to incorporate aerial photography into my client offerings, getting my license was the next step.  Taking the 107 Part B UAS Exam cost $150 and I didn't want to have to pay the FAA twice.  Because of that, I hit the web and started studying.  Many of my drone buddies have asked me to send over the tools that I personally used and so I've decided to make one master list.

Free Resources

FAA - 107 Part B Study Guide

FAA - Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge

Testing Centers

If you’re in Atlanta, I recommend The Centennial Aviation Academy @ The Dekalb Peachtree Airport.  You will be able to take the test within 48 hours and the staff is laid back but professional. http://www.centennialaviationacademy.com

FAA - Applicant Console

After you take and pass the exam, you will need to apply for your license here.  My physical license arrived 5 weeks after the exam. A temporary license number was provided online, three weeks after the exam.

Paid Resources

Drone Launch Academy

I am only recommending DLA because I personally used them as an additional resource and I passed the exam on the first try.  The academy allows you to learn at your own pace, is video driven and once you purchase your membership it lasts for 5 years.  This is beneficial for when it's time to renew your pilot's license in two years.

I do believe that you can pass the exam with all of the free resources but I am pleased with the platform and community at Drone Launch Academy.

Things To Bring

Magnifying glass - I’m glad I had one.  Regardless of vision or age the sectional maps are hard to read on their own.  Having the magnifying glass will make the map easier to read

Calculator - I didn’t have any questions that required math but many of my associates have experienced math questions in the past.  The testing facility also offered me a calculator.  As a reminder, you will not be able to have your phone during the test.

Start Studying

Good luck and don’t underestimate the power of studying.  Having your 107 part B license has many benefits but it's going to take some work to get there.  If you have any other resources that you have used, please post them in the comments below.
