Using Twitter to track words and uh yourself

I was starting to get disturbed by the fact that I couldn't get notified of @replies to myself unless I had direct message/sms notification on for the person I was following.   People have been replying but sometimes while on the go, I wouldn't know until I logged back into twhirl or jumped back on to check statuses.

While digging around on twitter I found a tracking command.  Via sms you can track a work on the fly simply by typing track and then the word.   This can be great for following whatever it is you follow in your industry.  If you are a widget maker and you are away from your computer, you can type in track widgets and get notified on the spot or until the next person (even if you are not following them) talks about widgets.

To untrack, just type in - untrack word.

Now on to my original problem.  If you want to get notified of all of your @name replies, just track @yourname and you will know when people are replying to you or at least twittering about you behind your back ;)

My favorite Twitter Tools

I never thought that I would say this, but I'm feeling Twitter.  In the past two years I've signed up for at least a dozen social networking sites.  I test them out, I study, I network and then I leave them alone.  The truth of the matter is, if it doesn't make me any money or makes my life easier, then it's a waste of time.

As simple as it is, Twitter makes my life easier and makes me money (indirectly).   With so much other stuff to manage, I hardly blog on my own personal site anymore but everyone still want's to know what I'm up to.   Twitter is very public but in an intimate way.

Here are five Twitter Tools that help me throughout the day.

Twitterberry - is a mobile app designed for the blackberry.   It's free and very easy to use.  It's also a great way to save on sms charges if you don't subscribe to a texting plan.   You will need data services active on your blackberry but then again, why would you have a blackberry with no data services?  The program handles replies and direct messaging flawlessly as well.  Many of my Iphone pals are using ThinCloud

Twhirl - is a desktop AIR client for your PC.   When I am online this is the only client I'll use.   Very intuitive and responsive.   Twhirl will also handle multiple Twitter accounts at once.  Great for site owners who pull multiple followers to different accounts. Honestly Twhirling is easier than using Twitter's own homepage.

Twitterfeed - feeds your blog to twitter.   Simply put - blog something and it's gets pushed automatically to your twitter account.  It's a great way to feed traffic back to your blog but can come off spammy if you publish a blog not in tune with your current twitter following.   I currently feed this site as well as my couscous site.  <--- shameless plug

TwitPic - keeps your audience awake with an occasional picture.   Twitpic uses pictures taken with your mobile phone and sends it along as a Tweet.  Tweets are only 140 characters but a picture can be worth a thousand...   well, you know the rest.   Their homepage also has an interesting mash-up of google maps, similar to Twittervision.

Summize - is a Twitter Conversation Search engine.  I use Summize for research only.  It's a great way to getter Twitter user's opinions on products, places, movies, media, websites and just about anything.   Every now and again, i'll toss out a question to my followers but having the opportunity to search the world of Tweets can be powerful.

Twitter is simple and it works.  If you're not on it yet, sign up.   If you're already on, what are some of your favorite Twitter Tools?   Tell me on twitter...   www.twitter.com/casthompson

How to Upgrade WordPress

1. Download the newest version

2. Extract it

3. Back up your wp-config.php to a safe location (it's the most important file)

4. Upload your newly extracted files to your current WordPress location

*Note - I personally only overwrite the root folder, the wp-admin folder and the wp-includes folder. I don't upload anything to my wp-content folder. That folder has your themes and plugins.

5. After you have copied everything, then point your browser here

6. The rest is magic

casthompson.com takes no responsibility if you screw up your blog! but seriously, it's so easy a 5th grader can do it.

Follow Me On Twitter

I've been getting a lot of email about the Blackberry Posts on my right sidebar. Most of the emails are in reference to how am I posting them. The answer is Twitter. Twitter is an awesome tool for communicating quick short messages via sms, web or app.

The other cool thing about it is that you can subscribe and get messages via sms. What does that mean?

Well, If I'm sailing in Bermuda and I want to let all of my friends know, all I have to do is SMS Twitter and all of my subscribers will get the same text.

Twitter is growing very quickly and my prediction is that it will start to pick up more steam throughout the year.

  • It's Free
  • You don't need a blog to Tweet
  • It's so easy Matthew Modine can use it
  • You can use your cell phone

Go ahead and follow me on Twitter!!

I just nuked 39 domains

Every four months I double check my domain portfolio for duds. Duds are domains that make me no money at all. Often these domains were purchased on the chance that one day they could yield more than $5.99 per year.

nukedomains.jpg

$5.99 doesn't seem like a lot of money but when you multiply that by hundreds of domains you can't be afraid to end a bad thing. Even if I don't flip a domain, it needs to make money via ppc advertising or affiliate marketing. Two examples of simple domain parking as an extra income source are www.solarbluetooth.com and www.ficotools.com.

Here are the 39 dumped domains. Would you have held on to any of these?

1. 8100c.com
2. 8100g.com
3. 8100r.com
4. 8100ringtones.com

Out with Sage In With Google Reader

I'm a huge firefox user and one of my favorite add-ons is Sage.  Staying on top of niche related news can be rough but with a rss system in place one can get a quick fix in a very organized manner.  Sage has been doing that for me for several month within my firefox sidebar.  My problem has come up while I'm at remote locations.  Even though it's been out for a while I had to switch over to google reader.  RSS on the go is a must.

999 Joost Invites

cosmo

I just finished watching Cosmo Warrior Zero on my Joost player when I noticed that I had 999 Invites in my widget toolbox. This should solve a lot of problems for people still trying to get in.

After doing light research, I discovered that their launch date is coming pretty soon and they just signed the NHL as well as CNN. Go here for more info on Joost.

First Joost Commercial

I was browsing through Youtube and noticed the first Joost Commercial.  Not as exciting as I thought it would be but it shows that the company is making progress.  They have also made some changes to the website.  It certainly looks as though they are trying to come out of beta.  I'm personally waiting for more channels.

Joost Token Weekend Contest

For all of you bloggers that are trying to get a Joost token, Joost forums has another weekend contest going on.  This time the contest is based on link exchanges.  It's pretty easy to enter and seeing that Joost did not release those tokens on the 15th as was rumored, this might give a lot of people hope.

Free Joost Invites

If you haven't heard of Joost by now, you might live under a rock.  It's the new TV on your computer application that has been developed by the creators of Kazaa and Skype.  Although watching TV on your computer is not a new thing, the marketing and partnerships behind this project are starting off pretty strong.  Everyone and their mama are trying to get invites for beta testing.  A great source is The Joost Forums.  The quality of the Joost Player is better than YouTube and the content is studio driven not user driven.  I don't know...   this could be a hit.

5 Days Left to Get Skyped Up

Earlier I wrote about skype changing it's business model from free to not so free.  I just want to remind you guys that there is only 5 more days to get in at the $15 price.

It's been a life saver for me in Puerto Rico as skype to skype calls are always free.  $15 will get you unlimited calls within the U.S. and Canada for the next year.  Here's the catch...  it's only for a limited time.   On February 1st, this price will shoot up to $29.99.

Try skype free...   I'm sure you'll see that it's worth it's weight in internet gold!
