Success Principles by Will Smith

This is a video that I like to watch when I need a little reminder of why I'm working as hard as I am.   I don't have any aspirations of becoming a movie star but have applied some of these principles to help me with some of my smaller goals.

It's a long video but well worth the watch.  My favorite piece is skill verses talent.

13 small things to simplify your workday

Post written by Leo Babauta.

One of the best things I did when I decided to simplify my life was to simplify my workday — first at my day job and later, by quitting my day job, in the work I do now as a writer and entrepreneur.

I’ve eliminated most of the routine, boring, administrative tasks with a few simple principles.

These days, I have eliminated the non-essentials, and can focus on what I truly love: creating.

Not everyone can make such drastic steps toward simplicity, but if you have some control over your workday, you can do a few small things that will simplify things greatly.

office

If you don’t have control, or if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t do these things”, I’d start to ask why not? Is it possible to change things, if not today then over the long term? I found that often I thought something wasn’t possible (working from home, for example), but in the long run they were.

You don’t need to do all of these things — pick just one, and try it. Then try another and see if it works. Experiment to find what works for you.

And enjoy the simple work life.

  1. Start early. Going into work early was one of my favorite tricks — it was quiet, before the phones and chatter and meetings started, and I could get a lot of work done in peace. By the time everyone else was getting started, I’d gotten two or three big tasks checked off.
  2. Limit your hours. It’s ironic, because so many people work long hours and think they’re getting more done and being more productive. But they’re throwing brute hours at the problem. Instead, cut back on your hours and set a limit — say 6 or 7 hours a day — and get your most essential work done within that limit. If you know you’re only working 6 hours today, you’ll be sure to get the important tasks done first and waste less time. Limits force you to be effective.
  3. Make a short list. Make a long list of all the tasks you need to do … then make a short list of 1-3 things you really want to get done. Choose so that, if you got only these tasks done, you’d be proud of what you did today. Start with the most important task, before checking email or reading online.
  4. Batch distractions. What are your common distractions? Perhaps things like email, reading blogs, Twitter or another social network? Set a time for these, preferably later in the day: say, from 3-4 p.m. Don’t do the distractions before then. By grouping them all into one time period, you allow yourself to do other work first, but still get in your distraction time. Another approach might be to do them for 10 minutes at the end of each hour — but stick to that 10-minute limit!
  5. Write shorter emails. If email takes up a lot of your day, the simple change of limiting yourself to 3-4 sentences per email will make a big difference. First, it’ll drastically shorten the time it takes to write or respond to emails. And second, it’ll shorten responses to your emails, which means you’ll spend less time reading email.
  6. Limit meetings. The fewer the better. Some top Google executives just do 5-minute meetings — anyone who attends these meetings had better be prepared, and concise. If you can get out of meetings and just get the notes, or find an alternative way to communicate, it could save you hours per week.
  7. Automate. The fewer repetitive and routine tasks you have to do, the more time you’ll free up for creating and important work. So automate wherever possible: have people fill things out electronically, or get info from your website instead of emailing or calling you, or use a service that automatically processes payments or ships your product, and so on.
  8. Eliminate paperwork. I used to deal with a lot of paperwork, and even then I knew it was a waste of my time. If businesses and organizations could have paperwork filled out electronically, it would save a lot of paper, copying, filing, and duplicate effort. Whenever possible, eliminate paperwork in favor of digital. This might be more of a long-term move.
  9. Clear your desk. This can be done in a few minutes. Clear everything off the top of your desk. Only put back a few essential items. Everything else should be: filed, given to the appropriate person, given a permanent spot in a drawer, or trashed/recycled. Make quick decisions and then get back to work.
  10. Get away. If you can get out of your office, you can find a peaceful spot where you can focus on important work. Find a spot where you can work, turn off the Internet and do your work, and then turn the Internet back on so you can email or upload it to the appropriate spot. Working from home is a good option here. The more you can do this (it might be once a week, or an hour a day, or half of every workday), the better.
  11. Take breathing breaks. Every 15-20 minutes, get up from your desk, and take a breathing break. It could be simply walking around the office, saying hi to someone, or even better, getting outside to get some fresh air. Walk around, get your blood circulating, perhaps massage your neck and shoulders if you feel tension. Do some pushups if you want to get fitter. When you get back to work, remind yourself what you want to be working on, and clear away all distractions.
  12. Practice a focus ritual. Every hour or two, do a refocus ritual. This only takes a minute or two. You might start it by closing down your browser and maybe other open applications, and maybe even take a walk for a couple of minutes to clear your head and get your blood circulating. Then return to your list of Most Important Tasks and figure out what you need to accomplish next. Before you check email again or go back online, work on that important task for as long as you can. Repeat this refocus ritual throughout the day, to bring yourself back. It’s also nice to take some nice deep breaths to focus yourself back on the present. More focus rituals.
  13. Schedule big blocks of creative time. Not everyone can do this, but when possible, put a big block of 3-4 hours in your schedule for creating or doing other important work. Make this time inviolate, and don’t allow meetings or other things to be scheduled during this time. Be ruthless about clearing distractions and doing the work you love during these blocks, taking breathing breaks as necessary. Rejoice in your creativity.

Stop Whining!

In the past week, I have had several chats with close friends, family and peers.

As things in life seem to get a little tighter for the folks around me,  it seems as though the main theme has been centered on "not giving up" vs "caving in".
level

In the past 12 months the economy has set a few people back. It has been devastating for some and eye opening for others. I am fortunate to have a lot of positive people in my circle from which I have drawn motivation. If you are not as fortunate, please look at this post as my way of paying it forward.

Having to cut back on a lot of things has forced me to put my mind into a place that it hasn't seen in many years. Although, I am fortunate to still have my health, family and sources of income, business has slowed down in a big way. Engines that once ran on their own have started to come to a stand still.

For most people this would seem like a negative but after a few great conversations, I have started to embrace the place that I'm in. I feel just as excited as the day I started my first entrepreneurial venture.   I feel hungry.  I feel eager to create something new, exciting and helpful.  My mind is more focused than it's ever been.

The things that gave me my push years ago such as constant reading, networking, trying and failing and active listening have found their way way back into my life.  Being an entrepreneur, hustler, go getter or what ever you want to call it has it's ups and downs.  Sometimes it's takes a little rattle to take you out of your comfort zone.

If you are being rattled at home or at work or at school, embrace it.  It's just a test.   It's a reminder that we all should be 110% focused on innovation and getting to that next level all of the time.

Whining about the setback or the potential of being setback is just a distraction/excuse for not performing at your true potential.  Yep, me included.

Let's get back to the grind or let's start a new one.   Public Service Announcement = over ;)

Don’t Punk Down!

After speaking with a colleague this afternoon, I recommend that she read "Who Moved My Cheese"

Amazon Associates Site Stripe

The Amazon Associates Team has just added a nifty new feature that should help build links with ease.  It's called Site Stripe.

It allows you to surf Amazon and build a link to that page on the fly.   It will also give you earning updates througout the course of the day.  It's certainly an alternative to signing in to the portal and building links that way.

If you're not using Amazon Associates, you're missing out on recession proof money.

Bust A Domain Name

I'll admit it.  I have a domain fetish.  Sometimes an idea comes to me and well, sometimes it's not so easy.   If I have a product idea but not a domain to go with it, I turn to BustAName.com.

Bustaname.com is great for brainstorming compound domain names.   They will automatically put words together and tell you what .com, .net and .org sites are available for that word or phrase.

Oh, the best part is that it's a free service.   It's seems as though they make their money through hosting recommendations.   Try em' out here.

My Very Last $4000 Clickbank Check

Ok guys, this is the last clickbank check that i'll be posting on my site.  You're probably getting tired of these web checks anyway.   I opened up some business mail today and just couldn't resist.

This is my last check not because I'm quitting the business but because Clickbank is now offering direct deposit.

Everyone knows that I have a Big Check fetish but all jokes aside, direct deposit offers a lot more security for anyone who gets checks from their affiliate programs or google adsense in the mail.  Last summer I actually lost one of these checks and I went through hell to get another one cut.

If you haven't set up clickbank direct deposit, you can set it up here.

One less check to put with my dirty socks

I receive 10 - 15 checks a month and if they were all set up via direct deposit, life would be easier.  To learn how to earn money on your blog using clickbank read my CBPayDay Review

How many checks are you recieving per month?

Amazon Launches Video Widgets

Amazon has always been one of my favorite affiliate programs and after recently getting into video, the timing couldn't be better.

You can use videos that you already have or create brand new videos to promote the products you really love.

For my tester video, I used the couscous recipe video I posted a few days ago and incorporated Near East Instant Couscous as my product being that I sincerely plugged it anyway ;)

The ultimate question is, as a customer, would you find this annoying, useful or do you have ad blindness?

Play the video and let me know.

Engaging Readers With Video

So, I finally did my first video post. As most of you know, to stay healthy, I have been on a serious couscous kick.  It has gotten so serious that about a year ago I started a couscous recipe blog to document the recipes I have found online.

Although the site is monetized, the true goal is to help people open their eyes to other foods and cultures.  After getting tons of questions from curious friends, I decided to pull out my flip mino and start shooting.

What have I learned about adding video to the site in the past week?

Readers are much more engaged with video over static content.  Sometimes it's easier to hit play and just listen in comparison to reading.   Video is also more exciting.   The more excited readers are, the more word will travel and the more traffic you will get on your site.

Video is also more socially spreadable the text.   Readers love interaction, even when it's virtual.  Within an hour of posting, your video can be funneled through friendfeed, twitter, facebook or any of your other favorite social media sites.   Test it out, shoot a video today and your traffic will increase...   just try not to over do it.

By the way, check out my simple couscous recipe video ;)

Make $20.88 In One Day

Still doubtful that you can make money online?  If you have a product that you believe in, then you can earn money online.

The case study started on May 26 (less than two weeks ago) and I challenged myself to make something out of nothing.  Would you like to make $20.88 (or more) in one day?

1.  Read and establish a niche.   I love electronics.  So everyday I read up on gadget news.  Not necessarily to buy websites, just for the love.  Your niche should always be something you love and have a passion for.   If it's not then the whole process will seem like work (and work sucks!) -

Note - don't pick ringtones, weight loss or dating.   These aren't even niches anymore.  Be truly unique.

2.  Get ahead of your niche.  Whatever niche you roll with, be a chess playing, ninja style assassin.  Know the trends of your niche and then you'll have a feel for whats coming next.

3.  Start a blog, a website, a twitter account, a myspace page, something...  or anything, just start.   The people who are afraid to start, out weigh the people that do it.   I started the flipmino site for $5.99.  Don't complain about expenses, skip Starbucks for two days and put that money into an online investment.

4.  Hook up with Amazon.   Amazon is my favorite long term affiliate program.   When Ebay was rolling with CJ, I could count on some strong earnings but now Amazon really does it for me.  As seen in the image, all you have to do is drive a potential customer to the site.   It doesn't matter what they buy, you will make a commission.

Note - Amazon was the perfect affiliate for the Case Study but depending on your niche, you might want to check out other programs

5.  Hustle, Hustle, Promote, Hustle, Promote, Promote

6.  Don't give up.   By my own admission, I got lucky with this test site.   It doesn't always go this smooth.  A matter of fact, I fail way more than I succeed.   I fail so much that I have a process that minimalizes failure.  The key is that I keep trying and my processes has gotten tighter over the past 6 years.  Another thing to keep in mind is that failure isn't often glorified.   There aren't too many sites where the author is displaying how many times he's messed up.   All you see is the money he/she made promoting xyz product or getting seed money for his/her startup.

Have fun with it!  oh, and check out the Flip Mino ;)

The Flip Mino is Available!

Flip Mino

The Flip Mino, a pint-sized but more powerful companion to the so-easy-your-grandma-will-be-a- YouTube-star Ultra, is now official. The Mino distances itself further by adding a Li-ion battery and a flat back-panel with touch-sensitive buttons (rather than the Ultra’s AAs and push buttons). Getting to Number One in Google

Going from nothing to number one for a search term on a new domain is always something to be happy about.   Since this is more of a learning tool, we wont be popping out the champaign quite yet though.  This screen shot is for learning purposes only.  The first rule is...  never brag about being number one on google for a search term!

Bragging will only draw attention from other marketers and will create unwanted competition.   Don't think that you can hold the spot forever if other people have caught on.

The second rule is, be ready for success.   Have you ever searched for something, clicked on the number one spot and it's a wasted page?   Grrrr...    Without being too spammy, try to provide quality content related to your niche.   That's the best way to hold your position.

I still have not spent anything for advertising and the test site got 75 hits yesterday.   Tomorrow is the 4th so we will see what Flip does with the Mino.

(fingers crossed)

Getting Listed on Google

After 6 days from purchase my new test site is now listed on google.  This was done organically without using any blackhat techniques, paying a seo specialist or subscribing to a link swapping site.

Tip number one is to just simply ask google to be listed by submitting your url here.

Tip number two is to add google adsense to your page.   I could be totally wrong but my new domains that have adsense running always gets picked up faster than those that don't.   The google spiders are quick to see whats going on on your page.

The flip mino is slated to drop in June, so this position puts me ahead of the curve.  I really want to be number one but getting listed is a start and anywhere on the first page is good.   Does anybody buy anything from the second page of a google search?  Rarely

Check the site out and in my next post I'll speak about layout.   www.flipminos.com - an unofficial affiliate case study.

From Nothing To Something: A Case Study

Even though I really try to save this blog from falling in the category of a "make money online" site, making money online topics are what I get emailed about the most.

I'm not an expert and mostly everything I know about earning online income came from trial and error.

I recently got an email asking for an example of starting with nothing and turning it into something. I will track all expenses and income from one website that I've just created over the next six months.

The website is http://www.flipminos.com

Date purchased: 5/23/2008

Cost: $5.99 from 1and1

Why did I purchase it? The Flip is a very popular, low end, usb camcorder that has been used by many bloggers, tweens, teens, early adopters and video journalist over the past year. Two days ago, using twitter, I overheard that a slim version of the flip should be entering the market place early in June. The new cameras are rumored to be called Flip Minos. My chance of failure is 50/50 but that's what domaining is all about. You see, this is just a rumor and what if the camera is called something else? ... FlipMinos.com will become dead space.

Before I do anything with a site, I site down and open up notepad and then I take project notes. I need to determine what I want out of the site. Do I want to make it a fan site for enthusiasts? Should I cover tips and tricks? Do I want a forum or a blog? How much time do I really have to devote on this one site?

These are all serious questions that shouldn't be taken lightly. If this is your first site, I suggest going all in. The next set of questions I put out is, how will I monetize? For electronics I usually run with Google Adsense, Amazon Affiliates and Buy.com.

The next step is building up the site. I know that it's old school but for a one page site (what I plan on using) I still use frontpage.

I aim for a lot of key words and clean crisp images.

After I publish, then I start marketing. My short term goal is to get to the first page of google using desired keywords.

I'll be back in a bit to let you know how I'm doing.
